Headaches During Pregnancy

The causes of headaches in women during pregnancy and postpartum may be primary headaches such as migraine headaches, tension headaches, or episodic headaches. Additionally, it could be secondary headaches, resulting from an acute episode of a pre-existing condition, indicative of issues related to the nervous system.

 

Controlling headaches during pregnancy for patients with a history of migraines is crucial because these patients have a higher risk of preeclampsia compared to those without headaches. (1)

The principle of treating headaches is to alleviate symptoms, considering avoiding the use of medications that may cause teratogenic effects or harm to the fetus because headaches usually do not adversely affect pregnancy outcomes. (2)

Non-pharmacological interventions are recommended, such as lifestyle changes, relaxation, adequate sleep, stress management, and staying hydrated. (1)
